hey all, sorry about the lack of clarity on my part.the trap system reference was to the speaker systems using a trapazodial style of cabinet such as the dts645a-f,dts945a-f,dts642a-f,dts942a-f,etc.the dts reference was to digital technology systems as offered by altec lansing.

Thanks guys, that is pretty cool. Sure isn't much talk or information around about latter Altecs. I hope I find a few more churches converting to the better sound of Bose sometime.

Yeah, the later stuff really gets ignored. Comparatively speaking, they probably aren't as common as the older models because they weren't made that long.

Mine was actually out of city hall, I'm told.

I didn't realize the A700 was a trapezoid until seeing those cabinets on ebay. I'll have to find pictures of the A800, because I don't recall what that is......... I thought it was subs.

I guess I was thinking of the A700XL...... it looks like the A700/800 difference is power handling.

    The A700 has the 1 inch HF 909 and the MR994A with a 515-8G.
The A800 has a 1.4 inch, I'd say the 299 and the MRII594A, probably the HP version of the 515-xG. Can't locate my data sheet on it.
    The A700XLF has two 3154 16's.

Though I'm looking at a pic of the similar box with the 515-8GHP replaced by the 904-8A. Which might be quite a sweet three way. It also i probably a custom setup. Not dissimilar to one of the Stanley Screamers.

Does the trapezoidal shape contribute to the sound of a single box sonically, or is the purpose for arranging arrays?

hello abg, from what little i know about the physics and the behavior of large cone loudspeakers,i believe the trapazodial shape of the speaker enclosure would prevent or at least help minimize the reproduction or occurence of any standing wave audio frequencies that might be induced in that particular enclosure size(read dimensions)(hence also the use of insulation or dampening material in speaker enclosures) and the trapazodial shape does conveniently arrange in a horizontal array that would physically form an arc.(and there could be problems develop from that) i know that there are more knowledgeble individuals on here that might chime in.

Exactly this. All the product info we received (when I still worked in ProSound) always touted the trapezoidal cabs for the ease of constructing point-source arrays. The control of standing waves was rarely mentioned and was included almost as an afterthought.

Of course, point-source arrays have been all-but abandoned now in favor of line arrays, but the trapezoidal cabinets are still needed to achieve the proper "curve" of the line.

Wonder what the next big advancement will be?
